The Therapeutic Groups for Caregiving relatives started to function yesterday. Gonzalo Soliño, psychologist and coordinator of the groups, was the one who opened this program, which takes place in the Integral Center for Assistance with Alzheimer of Afaga, in Vigo. This program is funded by Obra Social La Caixa.
These sessions are aimed at several objectives: on the one hand, to develop a context of security and trust, where people can share experiences, advise each other and let their feelings and emotions surface, etc.; on the other hand, to offer the participants the necessary knowledge to reach a better understanding of their relative with dementia so that they can be able to deal with the conflicts arising during the caregiving in a more solvent way.
This first opening session worked as a first contact between the participants and the coordinator.
Two groups with 12 people each have been formed and they gather on Tuesdays, the first group from 16:30 to 18:00 and the second from 18:30 to 20:00.
The participants show the usual profile: most of them are women related to the person suffering the disease, mainly their daughters, although there are also some spouses.
